The Granny Table
I'm really excited to share this project! I actually planned and executed this one! AND took pictures!!! Yay!
Before... |
I inherited this old dining room table from my Granny about a year ago, and I have just now taken the time to spruce it up. I really disliked the "golden oak" stain. I'm not sure if that is actually the color, but it's my guess. The four chairs that I received to accompany it are in the background of my garage. Simple dark cherry wood chairs. That is more my style. My friend Mary and partner in crime CRAFT came over to help me knock this project out! I wouldn't have gotten so much done that day without her! Thanks, buddy!!!
I probably won't get help next time after posting this pic! :-P |
Home Depot Shopping List
Black & Decker Hand Sander
80 grit and 220 grit sandpaper
Water Based Matte Lacquer
Rustoleum Flat Black Paint
Liquid Sandpaper
Foam Paint Brushes
Tack Cloth
Primer
Total: $104
(Normally I would freak o.u.t. over how much I spent for this craft project, but I wanted it done right. Plus, I'll have all the supplies I need to do a lot more projects that I have on the back-burner!)
First we sanded down the top! First with 80 grit sandpaper then with 220 grit. It got really dusty! Hence, our homemade version of a dust mask and goggles...aka sunglasses and a tea towel! Add that to the list for next time!!
Sanded top and liquid sandpaper to the bottom |
Also, this table isn't super high quality, and we sanded a little too deep around the edges. The particle board underneath started to show a bit on top. Oops! Just make sure you get the finish off, and then take it easy if you suspect yours is a veneer as well!
Such a good friend!! |
We used liquid sandpaper to get the shiny finish off the pedestal since we were just going to paint that. It helps the primer adhere without having to actually sand. (something that I hate doing!) Then we put on the first coat of stain to the top, and we put a coat of primer on the base. Now, we wait for that to dry. Then we repeat the process: very lightly hand sand, wipe with tack cloth, stain, wipe that off, prime 2nd coat on base, then wait for everything to dry. Repeat that again, but this time we painted the bottom black. Then we wait again, paint another coat of black, and wait.
after first coat of stain (before wiping it off) and one coat of primer |
2 coats of stain on top, 2 coats of primer and 1 coat of black on base |
All together the top got 2 coats of stain, the bottom had 2 coats of primer, and 3 coats of black paint. The whole thing then got 4 coats of lacquer.
Finished!!! |
I'm just loving my new little dining table! I can't wait for us to move at the end of the month, so I can stage it to take a proper photo!
BIG Thanks to my P.I.C. (partner in craft) Mary for helping me and to my hubby for watching the baby so we could get the craft bug out of our system!
Until the Craft Bug hits again!
